In this episode, we journey through Judges 13-14 briefly exploring what little we know about the the last three minor judges: Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon. The real star of the episode is Samson the final, most famous, and arguably worst, judge of all. Despite a major flaw, Samson’s obsession with self-gratification, God will use him.
The Set Up for the Last Major Judge
The book of Judges outlines a recurring cycle in Israel’s history: sin, oppression, deliverance by a judge, and a period of peace. The major judges begin with Israel’s evil deeds and end with peace. In the first three cycles, Othniel, Ehud, and Deborah, faithful judges, lead Israel to victory. However, in the next three cycles featuring Gideon, Jephthah, and Samson, judges struggle with faithfulness to God, leading to idolatry and more oppression.
Samson, the final judge, stands out as the worst, despite a miraculous birth announcement, being characterized by violence, immaturity, impulsiveness, and selfishness. Samson’s insatiable attraction to women, a mark of his greater character flaw, self-gratification, takes center stage. Instead of focusing on his divine mission, he impulsively marries a Philistine woman, much to his parents’ dismay.
The narrative unfolds as Samson insists on his own desires, resulting in a dead lion, a contentious wedding, 30 Philistine groomsmen, and mounting tensions with the Philistines, in this enthralling episode.
